In the early days of medicine, knowledge of surgery was extremely limited and confined as compared with modern day surgery. Surgeons had been generally trained in general surgery where they perform operations mostly around the abdominal region. General surgery does not include complicated operations with the head or heart.

All general surgeons are also trained in emergency surgery where they are needed to deal with initial procedures for nearly any surgical emergency and therefore they can always be found in the Emergency Room. They are always called to stabilize critically ill or badly injured patients where they'll have to perform general surgery to stop a bleeding or to stabilize heart beats and numerous other procedures. Upon successful stabilizing that they're referred to other specialists for follow up actions.

The field ofgeneral surgerywas held with highest esteem back then, where specialized knowledge was not refined. Nevertheless given today's technology, general surgery has lost its foothold in the medical field. Today, there are many sub specializations in medical science which covers many parts of what was once the forte of a general surgeon. Now that we have all the machines for delicate procedure, there are basically specialists for every organ in our body and that these specialists can really do a much better recovery job than whatgeneral surgery can provide.

As such, what once was highly respected in medicine has now been exiled to only the emergency room. However, we must still appreciate general surgery as it is the technique that keeps us alive most of them time for us to seek future assist.
